Four Wheel Drive

Four-wheel driving has quickly risen to become one of Australian’s favourite hobbies, with millions of dollars being spend on suitable cars and the accompanying equipment over the past two decades particularly. The equipment is one side of the equation, but what about once you are out on the trails, or the open road, out of reception and hundreds of kilometres from civilisation? The Garage Miami has prepared these handy tips to help ensure that you keep yourself out of trouble when out exploring.

Don’t Confuse Your Experience/Skill with Your Ambitions

Pretty simple really, if you are new to the off-road world, do your research and avoid the more challenging trails. There is quite some skill and experience required to carefully negotiate a treacherous decent or mammoth climb. If you are travelling in a group, don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for help. This can be achieved by following a path set by a more experienced driver, or even handing over the reigns completely if the section is above your skill level.

Communication

Invest in a decent 2-way radio to ensure communication between yourself and others in your group is regular, and more importantly reliable. Mobile phones are almost useless when you are out in the middle of nowhere!

First Aid

Always carry a first aid kit and ample water. If you or your convoy happen to find yourself injured for any reason, you will be thankful for basic supplies such as bandages, a good antiseptic solution, dressings and gloves. When trying to estimate your water consumption throughout a trip, remember to take into consideration not only your drinking water, but also your shower water and washing up water. If in doubt, bring more!

Check Water Depths

Always check the depth of puddles and rivers before attempting a crossing in your vehicle. Puddles are great fun until you find yourself knee deep in murky waters with many hours remaining in the trip!

Seat Belt

This should go without saying, always wear your seatbelt and ensure all your passengers are too! Even when crawling at a snail’s pace, accidents can and will happen. Seat belts are the easiest way to ensure safety for those in your vehicle.
